SHOCKWAVE
THERAPY

A new option for stubborn pain & injuries.

Shockwave therapy uses targeted radial pressure waves to deliver mechanical energy to an area being treated.  At MOVE Therapy, it can be used as part of an individualized treatment plan for certain tendon, muscle and other musculoskeletal conditions.

ASK US IF SHOCKWAVE MAY BE RIGHT FOR YOU!

1

WHAT IS SHOCK WAVE THERAPY?

Shockwave therapy, also known as radial pressure wave therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that delivers mechanical pressure waves to a targeted area of the body.

2

HOW DOES IT WORK?

During treatment, a therapist applies a handheld applicator to the skin over the area being treated.  The device delivers a series of radial pressure pulses into the tissue.

The pressure waves create a mechanical stimulus in the treatment area.

Depending on the condition and treatment goal, your therapist can adjust the intensity, frequency and transmitter used.

3

WHAT CAN IT HELP WITH?

Shockwave therapy can be considered for a range of persistent tendon and soft tissue conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis & heel pain

  • Achilles tendon pain

  • Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow) / Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s Elbow)

  • Patellar tendon & kneecap-related pain

  • Certain shoulder tendon conditions

  • Myofascial trigger points

  • Sports & overuse injuries

  • Chronic pain and more...

4

WHAT DOES TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

Some people describe the sensation as:

Tapping • Pulsing • Pressure

Treatment can feel uncomfortable, particularly when treating a sensitive or painful area, but your therapist can adjust the treatment parameters as needed.

5

HOW LONG DOES A TREATMENT TAKE?

The shockwave portion of treatment is relatively brief, typically taking a few minutes depending on the area being treated.

Your appointment may also include assessment, other hands-on treatment, exercise or rehabilitation as appropriate.

6

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

The number of treatments varies depending on the condition, the area being treated and your response to treatment.

Some clinical protocols involve a series of treatments rather than a single session.  Your therapist will discuss an appropriate treatment plan with you after your assessment.

7

HOW DOES SHOCKWAVE FIT INTO MOVE THERAPY?

Shockwave is one tool in the MOVE Therapy toolbox.

We don't view it as a stand-alone solution or a replacement for rehabilitation. When appropriate, shockwave can be combined with exercise prescription, manual therapy, education and progressive rehabilitation as part of an individualized treatment plan.

Our goal isn't simply to treat an area of pain.
It's to help you move better and get back to doing what you enjoy!

8

IS SHOCKWAVE RIGHT FOR EVERYONE?

No. Shockwave isn't appropriate for every person or every condition.

Your therapist will review your medical history, symptoms and treatment area to determine whether radial pressure wave therapy is appropriate for you.

If you're unsure, ask us.

9

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY PRICING

Your first visit includes an assessment with one of our physiotherapists or chiropractors to determine whether shockwave therapy is appropriate for your condition. The number of treatments recommended will depend on your individual needs and response to treatment.

Is shockwave therapy covered by insurance?

Shockwave therapy may be covered by some extended health benefit plans in Ontario.  Coverage varies between insurance providers and individual plans, so we recommend checking your coverage before beginning treatment.

If you're unsure whether shockwave therapy is right for you, contact MOVE Therapy and we'd be happy to help.
